What I learned 3 things from Laos during volunteering for 5months

Today I would like to share my special experience of volunteering.
Have you heared about Laos which is called a country where time passes slowly?
As you know, in modern society, especially in Korea, everthing needs to be done urgently and quickly. I was so sick and tired of living a busy modern society life, so I went to Laos for volunteer work to slow down for a while. At that time, I lived in small mountain village for 5months with my host family during a homestay and I was the only foreigner in the village. I'd like to share what I learned from that experience.

Firstly, I learned how to appreciate the small things in my given environment.
I lived with seven family members in the heat of the day when the temperature rose to 40 degrees, but there was only one fan in my house, so they had to make concessions for their youngest sister to use. But my family never complained about it. As a result of learning from them, I began to stop complaining, even though these circumstances were very uncomfortable. And also I am grateful for the things that I have enjoyed for granted in Korea.

Secondly, I learned how to share and realized the joy of it.
There was not enough food in Laos, so my family usually shared only one chicken with seven people. I was touched by the fact that all the villagers didn't have enough food, but when I passed by at mealtime, they always called me and asked me to eat together. From them, I learned the joy of sharing even small snacks and food.

LastIy, I learned how to stay away from the Internet and electronic devices and enjoy relaxing in nature.
Before I'm gonna ask one question. How much time do you use your smartphone?

For five months, I usually lived without the Internet, and I could go downtown only once a month to use Wi-Fi. I stayed away from the Internet and electronic devices, and a surprising change happened to me. I began to see the nature around me, which I normally ignored and I had more time to talk with my family. And my heart became peaceful as I no longer compare myself with other friends on Instagram.

Although you must be having a hard time, let's be grateful that we can come here to study and meet good people. Let's share small things together. Lastly, why don't you go outside instead of watching Neflix. Look at the stars in the sky, and talk to your family. I hope that you will be people who know how to slow down.
